Singapore Airlines A380 engine shut down in flight
Singapore Airlines had to shut down an engine on an Airbus A380
superjumbo en route to Europe on Tuesday and return the plane to
Singapore, the carrier said.
The plane, which was carrying 430 passengers to Frankfurt, Germany, was in the air about three hours wen crew reported a surge in one of its four Rolls-Royce engines. Pilots shut down the engine, turned the plane around and landed safely in Singapore using the three other engines, the airline said.
The passengers were transferred to another plane which took off to Frankfurt.
"The aircraft is capable of flying safely on three engines and at no time was the safety of our customers and crew compromised," Singapore Airlines said in a statement. "We are looking into the incident and the engine will undergo thorough inspections in consultation with Rolls-Royce."
The A380 superjumbo has been beset with a number of mechanical problems. Several carriers, including Singapore Airlines, discovered small cracks on A380 wings last year. In 2010, a Qantas A380 Rolls Royce engine exploded in mid-flight over Indonesia, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in Singapore.
Singapore Airlines did not specify the model of Rolls-Royce engine that had to be shut down Tuesday.
